1935年、山梨県韮崎市生まれ。
山梨大学学芸学部自然科学科卒業。
東京理科大学大学院理学研究科修士課程修了。
北里大学薬学部教授、北里研究所所長を経て北里研究所名誉理事長、北里大学名誉教授。
北里研究所所長在任中の1997年には女子美術大学理事長に就任。日本学士院賞をはじめ、米アーネスト・ガンサー賞、独ローベルト・コッホ金牌など数々の国際的な学術賞を受賞し、2016年にはノーベル生理学医学賞受章。
仏レジオン・ドヌール勲章、瑞宝重光章、文化勲章受章。
英国王立化学会、日本化学会などの名誉会員および日本学士院、米、独、仏、ベルギー、中国などの科学アカデミー会員。
現在、女子美術大学名誉理事長、北里大学特別栄誉教授。
Born in Nirasaki City, Yamanashi Prefecture in 1935.
Graduated from University of Yamanashi.
Completes the master’s program at Graduate School of Science, the Tokyo University of Science. Serves as Professor at School of Pharmacy, President of the Kitasato Institute.
Becomes President of Joshibi University of Art and Design while serving at the Kitasato Institute.
Awarded with several important academic awards such as the Japan Academy Prize, Ernest Guenther Award in the Chemistry of Natural Products, Robert Koch Gold Medal and Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2016.
Honored with Chevalier of the Ordre National de la Legion d’honneur (Chevalier), The Order of the Sacred Treasure, Gold and Silver Star, the Order of Cultural Merit. Holds membership of academic societies such as the UK Royal Society of Chemistry, Japan Academy and others.
Currently President Emeritus of Joshibi University of Art and Design, Distinguished Emeritus Professor of Kitasato University.
