1927年　京都市に生まれる。父は西陣の染色図案家、祖父は四条円山派の絵師。
1944年　京都市立美術工芸学校絵画科を4年で修了した後、東京美術学校（現東京藝術大学）入学。
1958年　第2回グッゲンハイム賞国際美術展に出品。この頃から截金など古典技法の習得に努める。
1959年　横山操、石本正と轟会を結成。
1961年　NYジャネット・ネスラー画廊で個展開催。
1966年　多摩美術大学日本画科教授に就任。
1988年　多摩美術大学教授辞任。東京藝術大学美術学部教授に就任。
1995年　東京藝術大学を定年退官。名誉教授となる。
1996年　大英博物館日本ギャラリーで「加山又造展」開催。
1997年　天龍寺法堂の《雲龍図》が完成。文化功労者として顕彰。
2003年　文化勲章受章。
2004年　死去。享年76歳。

Born in Kyoto, in 1927 as the grandson of a Kano School painter and the son of a Nishijin textile pattern designer.
Enters the Tokyo School of Fine Arts (Tokyo University of the Arts) after studying for four years at the Kyoto Municipal High School of Arts and Crafts.
Participates to Guggenheim International Exhibition in 1958.
Forms Todoroki-kai, an artist group consisting of Misao Yokoyama, Sho Ishimoto and Kayama in 1959.
Holds solo exhibition at the Janet Nestler Gallery in NY in 1961.
In 1995, becomes Emeritus Professor of the Tokyo University of the Arts.
British Museum holds “KAYAMA MATAZO— New Triumphs for Old Traditions” Exhibition in 1996.
Selected as Person of Cultural Merit.
Honored with the Order of Culture. Dies at the age of 76 in 2004.
